Why Your Winter Skin Still Needs Sun Protection

A woman standing with her face pointed towards the Winter sun

It goes without saying that Summer is the season in which we need to be most aware of protecting ourselves from sun exposure.  Summer days are more likely to have a higher UV rating, the weather lends itself to us spending more time outside, and we're less likely to be wearing clothes that cover our skin.  But don't make the mistake of thinking that sun protection is just for days spent out in the Summer sun.

All the same factors that lead to us taking precautions in the sun over Summer are still relevant year-round. At any time of year, we should always be thinking about how we can best protect our skin from sun exposure.

This is especially relevant if you have occupational or leisure activities that have you spending time outside for extended periods during the day.  People do still get sunburnt in Winter, but it is not just about sunburn.  The cumulative effect of sun exposure is also a consideration.

One of the most obvious Winter activities that should have people remembering to be aware of sun exposure is when at the snow.  Usually when skiing or taking part in snow activities, you are well rugged up.  But the area often neglected could be your face, neck, ears etc.

So if you're out on the slopes this Winter, remember to stay safe in the Winter sun.

Winter is usually a quieter time for us at Molescope, because people aren't thinking about skin cancer as much as they do over Summer.  But that makes it the perfect time to come for your skin check.
